In November, 2004, Brown University student Mario Sifuentez and PCUN embarked on a collaboration to make PCUN history and documentation more accessible to the community and the wider public. Mario and volunteers have already spent hundreds of hours pouring through PCUN’s archives of over 25 years of documents, periodicals and clippings, video and audio recordings, photos, and more. One crucial result this project will produce is a better organized archives. Below, Mario introduces himself and presents his views on this collaboration.

“My name is Mario Sifuentez and I am a PhD student at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. I am currently working on a biography project about Cipriano Ferrel and would like to tell you how I came to this project.

I am the son of migrant farmworkers who came to eastern Oregon in the late 1970’s and found a very hostile environment. Nevertheless they continued to work in the Northwest as laborers to provide my sister and me a better life than they had. Through there hard work I was able to attend the University of Oregon on an academic scholarship and completed both my Bachelors and Masters degrees there. While attending the University of Oregon I also became heavily involved in the activist community there, which is the first time I encountered the wonderful people at PCUN. As external director of the student group M.E.Ch.A I was involved in the campus effort to remove Gardenburger from our cafeterias and succeeded in putting the Gardenburger boycott on the United States Student Association platform.

Now, as an academic in training I believe that the next logical step for me is to tell the story of all those dedicated, passionate, and socially conscious people who made PCUN what it is today. Cipriano Ferrel was a large part of PCUN’s success, yet he did it with a modesty and humbleness not often seen in today’s world. Through his life I plan to tell the story of not only PCUN but also the story of so many Mexican immigrants and their families who make the Northwest the agricultural success it is.

I believe this story is important not only for academics and students but also for the community. It is time that the nation and those in power recognize the great achievements and contributions that Mexican immigrants have made to this region. But more importantly it is important for our youth to read about themselves and their families in textbooks and in history, to see themselves as agents of change and resisters of oppression. It is for this reason that I asked any and all of you who have a story to tell, to share those stories, if not with me then with each other. Proyecto de La Biografía de Cipriano Ferrel

En noviembre de 2004, Mario Sifuentez, estudiante de la Universidad Brown, y PCUN entraron en una colaboracion para hacer mas acesible a la comunidad y el público la historia y la documentación de PCUN history and documentation. Mario junto con algunos voluntarios ya han dedicado cientas de horas revisando y organizando los archivos de PCUN, incluyendo documentos, periodicos y recortes, grabaciones de video y audio, fotos, y mas. Así es que otro resultado clave de este proyecto es que rendirá archivos mejor organizados. En la declaración a continuación, Mario se presenta y comparte su perspectiva sobre la colaboración.

“Mi nombre es Mario Sifuentez y soy un estudiante doctorado en la Universidad de Brown en Providence, Rhode Island. Estoy trabajando en el proyecto de la biogra-ía de Cipriano Ferrel y quiero compartirles como llegué a entrar en este proyecto.

Soy hijo de campesinos migrantes quienes llegaron al este de Oregon en los años 70 y encontraron un ambiente fue hostil. Sin embargo, trabajaron en la obra en el noroeste para hacer posible una mejor vida para me y mi hermana. Por medio de su trabajo duro, pude asistir a la Universidad de Oregon con una beca academica y terminé mi bachillerato y maestria ahí. Cuando era estudiante en la . Universidad de Oregon, me involucré activamente como activista comunitaria y así me encontré con la gente maravillosa de PCUN. Como director de relaciones externas de M.E.Ch.A, participé en las campañas para quitar los productos de Gardenburger de nuestras cafeterias y logré a meter el asunto de boicoteo de Gardenburger en la agenda y acurerdos de la Asociación Estudiantil EEUU.

Hoy, como académico aprendiz, creo que el próximo paso apropriado para me es contar la historia de la aquellas personas comprometidas, animadas y concientes que hicieron PCUN lo que hoy ha llegado a ser. Cipriano Ferrel jugó un gran papel en los éxitos de PCUN, pero lo hizo con humildad escazamente vista hoy día. Por medio de su historia, quiero contar ambos la historia de PCUN y de tantos inmigrantes mexicanos y sus familias que han hecho rico la agrícola noroeste..

Creo que esta historia es importante no solamente para académicos y estudiantes, sino también para la comunidad. Ahora es cuando que esta nación y los poderosos reconocen los grandes logros y contribuciones a esta región de los inmigrantes mexicanos. Aún mas importante, esta historia es para la juventud, para que lean la historia de sus familias en libros escolares y así poder verse como una fuerza de cambio y resistencia contra la opresión.
